Drogheda player fails drugs test

Drogheda United midfielder Glenn Lacey has tested positive for a banned substance, but the County Louth club have not terminated the 21-year-old's contract.

In a statement issued today, the current eircom Premier Division leaders confirmed that: "Glenn Lacey has tested positive for a banned substance. But contrary to what has been reported in this morning's press, he has not had his contract terminated."

Lacey, formerly of Shamrock Rovers, is the second eircom League player in eleven months to have had a positive reading from a random testing.

Rovers goalkeeper Barry Ryan was banned last September, for 15 months, reduced to nine months on appeal, after traces of a banned recreational drug were found in his sample.

Ryan signed for Roddy Collins' Dublin City last month.
