Celtic manager Martin O'Neill insists that new signings are essential if the club is to do well at home and abroad this season.

The Hoops will begin their defence of the Bank of Scotland Premier League title at home to Motherwell on Sunday.

The Hoops will have been boosted by last night's 2-1 victory over Newcastle United in their final pre-season game.

Henri Camara marked his Hoops debut by coming off the bench to fire a late winner after Momo Sylla had cancelled out Craig Bellamy's opener.

Camara remains the only signing so far however, with Henrik Larsson, Johan Mjallby, Liam Miller and Jamie Smith having left the club.

Celtic have qualified directly for the group stage of the Champions League and O’Neill is keen to bring in new players before the August 31 transfer window closes.

O'Neill said: “Obviously I hope to add to the squad between now and the end of August.

"I think we have to, personally, if we are to have any chance of retaining the league or trying to get any distance in European football, whether it is the Champions League last 16 or the UEFA Cup.

"We are down in numbers never mind anything else and, to be perfectly honest, down in quality with Henrik Larsson leaving."
