Former Newcastle and Rangers star Paul Gascoigne was rushed to hospital with suspected food poisoning ahead of this afternoon's clash between the two clubs at St James' Park.

The 37-year-old, who was due to be a guest of honour at the Newcastle-Gateshead Cup game, was taken ill before the kick-off and admitted to the city's Royal Victoria Infirmary.

A spokesman for the hospital said: "Mr Gascoigne is in our hospital, but the patient wishes no media coverage and we are respecting his wishes."

The former England international was unveiled as assistant boss of Coca-Cola League Two side Boston earlier this week.

Boston manager Steve Evans told the Press Association: "Paul's hospital visit is precautionary, and he will play in our friendly at Stevenage on Monday.

"He is in top-class condition and we are delighted to have him at Boston United.

"I have spoken to him and he is in fine fettle. As always with Gazza, these things are blown up a bit out of proportion."
