Non-league Tullamore had no answer to 19-year-old hat-trick hero Adrian Murphy as Athlone recorded a facile victory.
Tullamore’s hopes of a shock were dented as Athlone took the lead on seven minutes with Murphy cracking home from 25 yards following Micky Collins’ quick throw.
Murphy then struck again on 32 minutes to side foot home after Damien Rushe played him through on goal.
The hat-trick was completed in the final minute when Murphy turned home a pass from Micky McCann.
