Longford hoping for lift in Liechtenstein

Longford Town are hoping that their UEFA Cup qualifying tie against Liechtenstein outfit Vaduz can help kick-start their stuttering eircom League campaign.

Longford have gone six games without a win in the league and are dangling just above the relegation zone, however, thanks to their FAI Cup triumph last season, they can forget about that for the time being as they travel to Liechtenstein.

Manager Alan Mathews believes that the change of scenery could provide the boost that the side need to turn things around.

"We've not been playing well or getting the results but hopefully the few days away, in a different competition, will help us. While it is not ideal coming here after losing to Dublin City, it is now gone completely out of the mind and this is another job totally," he said.

Mathews also insisted that he will not be underestimating his side's opponents, who despite being based in Liechtenstein, play their football in the Swiss second division.

"They are a big side and we will need to make sure we don't get exposed in the first 20 minutes," he said. "We won't be going gung ho because we know they will come at us but I think we are capable of getting a result," he added.
