Arséne Wenger: "suprised but non-commital"

The German Football Federation have approached Arsenal's French manager manager Arsene Wenger about taking over from Rudi Voeller as national coach according to German newspaper Hamburger Adenblatt. The 54-year-old Gunners manager, whose contract at Highbury runs to 2006, was "surprised but non-commital" according to news agency Reuters.

Wenger has said in the past that he wishes to lead Arsenal at least until they move to their new stadium at Ashburton Grove before the 2006/7 season.

Franz Beckenbauer, head of Germany's World Cup organising committee, has already proposed Wenger and Dutch-born Guus Hiddink, currently at PSV Eindhoven, as canditates to lead Germany to the 2006 World Cup.

Hiddink led unfancied South Korea to the 2002 World Cup semi-finals four years after leading Holland to the 1998 World Cup semis. Both Wenger and Hiddink speak German. Greece have already warned Germany about trying to poach their German coach Otto Rehhagel after he led them to their Euro 2004 triumph.
