UEFA today confirmed that Wayne Rooney is to be credited with scoring England's second goal against Switzerland - despite the ball going into the net off Swiss goalkeeper Jorg Stiel.
Fifteen minutes from the end of yesterday's Group B match, Rooney picked the ball up from Darius Vassell and shot goalwards.
The low effort cannoned back off a post and was heading away from the goal when it struck Stiel on the head and rebounded back into the net.
UEFA originally credited the goal to the Everton striker - and confirmed they would not be changing their minds today.
England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson had said earlier today he hoped UEFA did not decide to take the goal away from Rooney.
The crucial guideline affecting Rooney states: "Shots which are on target (i.e. goalbound) but are then deflected, or balls rebounding off the goal frame and hitting a defender or goalkeeper, will not be considered as own goals.
It means the 18-year-old, who scored twice against Switzerland, has seven international goals to his name in 15 appearances.
Meanwhile, UEFA won't be studying replays of France's first goal against Croatia, which was given as an own goal by Croatian defender Igor Tudor.
Many observers felt the goal should have been credited to Zinedine Zidane whose free kick took a slight deflection off Tudor.
Zidane scored twice in France's opening game against England and would be leading the scorers' list on his own with three goals. He currently shares the lead on two with Rooney and Henrik Larsson of Sweden.
