Huddersfield won the Third Division play-off final with a 4-1 penalty shoot-out victory against Mansfield at the Millennium Stadium.
After extra-time the match was still goalless, but Huddersfield held their nerve with substitute Lee Fowler scoring the decisive spot-kick as the Yorkshire club returned to the Second Division at the first attempt.
Rob Edwards, Danny Schofield and Tony Carss were Huddersfield's other successful penalty-takers.
Mansfield had a dreadful start to the shoot-out, Huddersfield keeper Paul Rachubka saving from Wayne Corden before Liam Lawrence's chip, always a high-risk way to take a penalty, clipped the crossbar.
The Stags' plight was made worse by the fact they twice came close to winning the game at the end of nornal time.
However, Huddersfield might have saved themselves the agony of penalties had not Andy Booth missed three good chances.
