Leeds United expect Manchester United to return with an improved offer for their England striker Alan Smith.

Leeds director Peter Lorimer said: "We discussed the situation at a board meeting on Friday, but as yet no deal has been done. We have offers from other clubs, but Alan has said he would like to go to Old Trafford. This is the situation as it is now and, with United in the Cup final, we will look at it again next week."

Leeds have already rejected Manchester United offers of £3.5 million and £5.5 million as undervaluing the 23-year-old goalscorer. The club say they have also received several rival offers, including a £7 million bid from Everton.

Smith, who scored 10 league goals for Leeds this season, has made it clear he wants to leave his home town club following their relegation from the English premier league.

Smith missed out on a place in Sven Goran Eriksson's 23-man England squad for Euro 2004 named this week, but is on stand-by in case of injuries.
