Leeds deny Alan Smith reports

Alan Smith's proposed move to Man Utd is certain to infuriate Leeds fans

Leeds director Peter Lorimer has denied that a deal has been done with Manchester United over the sale of striker Alan Smith.

According to the Daily Mail United have snatched the England striker from relegated Leeds for just six million pounds. However Leeds have responded by saying that no deal has been finalised.

Lorimer said: "We discussed the situation at a board meeting yesterday but as yet no deal has been done. We have offers from other clubs but Alan has said he would like to go to Old Trafford. That is the situation as it is now and with United in the cup final we will look at it again next week. We will see what Monday brings but at present Alan remains our player."

Smith, who is on standby for the European Championships next month in Portugal, effectively had the luxury of deciding which Premiership club to join. He turned down offers from Birmingham, Everton, Newcastle and Middlesbrough, who bid eight million pounds, because of his wish to play Champions League football next season.

United had already had bids of 3.5 million pounds and 5.5 million pounds turned down by Leeds, who are hoping to get as close to their 10 million valuation of Smith as possible. Leeds-born Smith's move to the club's arch rivals is destined to infuriate the Elland Road support who, prior to the catastrophic season which led to relegation, also saw their star defender Rio Ferdinand move to Old Trafford.
