Irish under-19s caught by Belgian sucker-punch

Ireland's under-19 team have it all to do if they wish to qualify for the European Youth Championships after a 1-0 defeat to Belgium in their mini-qualifying tournament.

Ireland wasted a hat-full of opportunities, most notably in the second half when Willo Flood and Patrick Cregg both failed to score from one-on-ones with the Belgian goalkeeper.

The killer blow came on the 88th minute when a wayward Irish pass found Belgium's Faris Haroum, who blasted the ball past goalkeeper Paul Murphy from the edge of the area.

Afterwards Irish manager Sean McCaffrey was bitterly disappointed and said: " We worked very hard, played very well and I think we deserved something from the game."

Ireland will take on Serbia and Montegoro tomorrow, after they comprehensively beat Norway 4-0 last night.
