Don Givens' side survived under intense pressure as the gifted Portuguese hit the crossbar and had two shots cleared off the Irish line. Liverpool's 20-year-old midfielder Michael Foley went closest to scoring for the Republic.
Ireland meet Italy in their next match tomorrow. The Italians managed to secure a 1-1 draw against a Madeira Island selection despite having two players sent-off.
