The Republic of Ireland Under-21s opened their account in a four-team tournament in the Madeira Islands with a 0-0 draw against their Portuguese counterparts this morning.
Don Givens' side survived under intense pressure as the gifted Portuguese hit the crossbar and had two shots cleared off the Irish line. Liverpool's 20-year-old midfielder Michael Foley went closest to scoring for the Republic.
Ireland meet Italy in their next match tomorrow. The Italians managed to secure a 1-1 draw against a Madeira Island selection despite having two players sent-off.
