Pat's place Byrne on transfer list

Eamonn Collins has placed St Patrick's Athletic midfielder Davy Byrne on the transfer list with immediate effect. A product of Stella Maris and Cherry Orchard schoolboys, Byrne went to Dundee United before returning to the eircom League with Shelbourne and then signed for Pat's at the start of last season.

Pat's manager Collins confirmed: "I had a long chat with Davy on Sunday morning and told him of my plans for the season ahead. I have total respect for the lad. I've known him a long time since his Cherry Orchard days. It was very difficult to sit down to tell him he was not going to feature in my squad this season."

It is believed that Collins wants to see Keith Fahey take up a more central midfield role alongside veteran Paul Osam, a berth Byrne would also seek to occupy. Having signed Karim el- Khebyr for another year, it means the Inchicore side have a surplus of midfield players available and though the Frenchman starred at left full last season, Collins has Keith Foy available for that position.
