Benfica player dies after collapse

Benfica's Hungarian international Miklos Feher has died after suffering a suspected heart attack. Feher collapsed on the pitch at the end of the Portuguese club's 1-0 win over Guimaraes on Sunday.

The 24-year-old striker was treated on the pitch by medical staff after falling to the ground following a booking in injury time and was later taken to Guimaraes hospital, where all efforts to revive him failed.

Benfica spokesman Antonio Cunha Vaz said: "We are all in deep shock and would first like to send his family our condolences. All the Benfica board and supporters are mourning our athlete, Miklos Feher."

Referee Olegario Benquerenca, who showed Feher the yellow card for time-wasting, said: "I immediately knew something was very wrong when he fell on the pitch and all I could do was call the medical crews of both teams."

Last summer, Cameroon international Marc-Vivien Foe died after collapsing on the field during his team's Confederations Cup match with Colombia in France.

Feher played 25 times for his country, scoring seven goals.
