Leeds will consider leaving Elland Road

Leeds United chief executive Trevor Birch has admitted the club will consider leaving Elland Road. Defeat at Southampton sent Leeds to the foot of the Barclaycard Premiership yesterday and crippling debts of £82million mean caretaker-manager Eddie Gray may be forced to sell players during this month's transfer window.

Birch admits Leeds need a new stadium in order to raise the revenue required to compete at the highest level. He believes the site of the current ground would be ideal for redevelopment as a supermarket.

He revealed: "Yes, it's true we are exploring every option and the possibility is that one day in the future the site will be redeveloped. We need to have a new stadium, whether it's at Elland Road or elsewhere, to have the revenue needed to compete at the highest level. It's a simple fact of life in the Premiership.

"Redevelopment for the stadium will, at some stage, be the goal but it's a long way down the line. I think it will happen. It's in a prime industrial area and would be an ideal site for somewhere like an Asda. It's worth a great deal of money."
