Current Longford Town assistant boss Aaron O'Callaghan is expected to finalise a two-year contract to become the new manager of Athlone Town on Monday evening.
A statement from Athlone, who finished fourth from bottom of the eircom League First Division last season, revealed that the former Stoke City defender impressed during the interview process, prompting the club to open contract negotiations with the 37-year-old.
Former Carlisle United and Bohemians manager Roddy Collins last weekend expressed an interest in the Athlone vacancy, however, Town chairman Paddy McCaul confirmed to RTÉ that the high-profile Collins wasn't among the list of "six or seven" candidates in the running for the post.
O'Callaghan would succeed Jimmy Greene, who stepped down as manager of the midlands outfit at the end of the season in December.
