Zidane named as Player of the Year

Arsenal striker Thierry Henry has missed out on the FIFA Player of the Year award, with the honour going to his international team-mate Zinedine Zidane instead.

Henry has been in outstanding form during the last year and had widely been expected to pick up the award, however based on a worldwide vote by 142 national team coaches, Zidane received 264 points with French compatriot Henry second on 186 and Brazilian Ronaldo third on 176.

The 31-year-old Zidane has previously been named as the World Player of the Year in 1998 and 2000, and has been hugely impressive for Real Madrid over the last year, guiding the club to their 28th Spanish title.
