Houllier dismisses Owen-Real speculation

Liverpool boss Gerald Houllier today dismissed reports that Real Madrid are planning a £25 million bid for Michael Owen. Speaking after his side's 2-1 win at Fulham, the Frenchman said: "My mobile is always on and I've never had any call from Real Madrid and neither has (Liverpool chief executive) Rick Parry."

Owen has 18 months left on his Liverpool contract and the club's failure to tie him down to a new deal has fuelled speculation he could be sold next summer. English newspaper reports said Sunday that Real were aiming to line Owen up alongside his England team-mate David Beckham. But Houllier said he was confident that Owen would soon put pen to paper. "I know that Michael wants to stay. The fans know that and at some stage we will try to reach an agreement."
