Petit to undergo knee surgery

Chelsea's French midfielder Emmanuel Petit will be out of action for at least six weeks after revealing that he will have to undergo surgery to try and solve a troublesome knee injury.

The former Arsenal player, plagued by injuries in recent months, has featured in just five games this season for the Blues and said: "These days, my knee is completely stiff. If all goes well, I think I'll need four weeks to recover and some six weeks to make it back on the pitch."

Petit said he had taken tablets for two weeks to help cure his swollen right knee, but they have had no effect and he will now go under the knife with professor Jean-Henri Jaeger in charge of the operation.

This injury will come as a major blow to Petit, who may well struggle to force his way back into Chelsea's starting eleven once he recovering from his latest operation.
