Wales and Scotland handed tough Euro draw

Wales and Scotland were both handed tough draws in their Euro 2004 qualification play-off ties. Scotland face a daunting showdown with Holland, while Mark Hughes' Welsh side will take on Russia, who beat Ireland to a play-off spot.

Elsewhere, the most closely contested tie of the draw appears to be that of Spain and Norway. Turkey, whose 0-0 draw with England on Saturday cost them an automatic place have a relatively straight-forward draw against Latvia, while Croatia will face Slovenia.

Scotland coach Berti Vogts said: "This is probably one of the toughest draws in the group but it is still just two games. Anything can happen and we have a chance. It will be a good experience for us but we are looking forward to it. The team played very well against Germany and we will have to do the same against the Netherlands."

Welsh boss Mark Hughes was marginally more happy with the draw his side got and said: "We have got to be reasonably happy with the draw. We are playing the second leg at home and I think everyone's view is that is an advantage. Russia have had some great players in the past so we know it will be a test and now we just have to do all the research, look at all the videos, to make sure we know about their players of the present."

The first leg of the play-offs will take place on either November 15 or 16, with the second leg in Wales coming on November 18 or 19.
