Scholes fitness boost for Man United

Following their Champions League victory last night, Manchester United were handed another boost with the news that Paul Scholes may not need to undergo surgery afterall.

Scholes has been troubled with hernia problem and was expected to have to go under the knife to solve it, however despite not featuring for United since he scored their winner at Newcastle last month, Alex Ferguson has revealed that his injury may not be as serious as was previously feared.

The United boss said: "Paul felt easier yesterday and, for the first time, it looks a little bit more encouraging. We have delayed surgery because we hoped it would settle down and it seems to be a little bit easier now, so we won't be doing an operation for the moment."

However despite the improvement in Scholes fitness, he is almost certain to miss out on the Champions crucial Premiership showdown with Arsenal on Sunday. Former Irish international midfielder Roy Keane is expected to be fit for the clash despite missing out on yesterday's game with an ankle injury, while John O'Shea, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Nicky Butt are all expected to shake off minor knocks.
