Swiss manager threatens to drop veterans

Switzerland's manager Koebi Kuhn has threatened to drop two of his most experienced players ahead of October's crucial Euro 2004 qualifying clash with Ireland in Basle.

Central defender Stephane Henchoz and veteran striker Stephane Chapuisat were savaged by the Swiss media after Wednesday's 4-1 defeat by Group 10 rivals Russia in Moscow, and despite the fact that Henchoz was not fully match fit for the clash, Kuhn has threatened to drop the duo.

Kuhn said: "There will be changes in the team. Henchoz and Chapuisat are not untouchable.I n attack I would have gladly play an alternative to Chapuisat. Naturally, Marco Streller (of FC Basel) is in my thinking."

Ireland travel to Switzerland on October 11, realistically needing to beat the home side in order to earn a place in the play-off stage of the Euro 2004 qualifiers.
