Celtic's UEFA Cup final with Porto at the Estadio Olimpico in Seville on May 21, will be the first match to use UEFA's new 'silver goal' rule.
The new system, which will replace the current golden goal system will sell a 15 minute period of extra-time being played should the sides be level at the end of full time. If one team is leading at the end of this 15-minute period, then they will be declared the winners.
However, if the sides are still level, a further 15-minutes will be played, with penalties following if the teams are still level after this second period.
UEFA public affairs director Mike Lee said "We believe that this will be good for clubs, players and fans. We have addressed the problems created by the golden goal which many in the game have identified. The new system will encourage positive football in the extra-time period, and produce a sensible and fairer ending to a game."
Many have criticised the golden goal system, which settled the 2001 UEFA Cup final between Liverpool and Alaves, claiming that it leads to negative, defensive football as both sides fear conceding the goal that will see the game end.
The new system will also be used in the Champions League final, which will take place at Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium.
