Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy is optimistic about his future at the Stadium of Light, regardless of whether or not the Black Cats survive relegation this season. Sunderland, with only nine games remaining, have just 19 points to their name and are in danger of plummeting into Division One with the lowest total ever recorded (Watford currently hold the record with 24 points). However, McCarthy is determined to turn things around at Sunderland before the season ends, even if relegation becomes a foregone conclusion.
"The job when I came in was to try and retain our Premiership status, but if that did not happen then the next part was to plan for next season," he said. "Unfortunately, it looks like we are getting nearer to the latter part. The team needs changing, and I want fresh faces to lift the desperation that surrounds this club."
