Bergkamp charged following Bowyer incident

Arsenal's Dennis Bergkamp has been charged with improper conduct by the English Football Association. The 33-year-old striker is in the dock following an incident involving Lee Bowyer in the Barclaycard Premiership clash with West Ham at Highbury on January 19.

The Hammers were furious when Bergkamp apparently elbowed Bowyer seconds before crossing for Thierry Henry to head his second goal in the 3-1 victory on 71 minutes.

The incident left Bowyer clutching his head and prompted Hammers boss Glenn Roeder to say afterwards: "Bergkamp clearly put his hand in Lee's face and pushed him over.

"He knows he's been fouled and the majority of people in the ground saw it -but the most important person didn't (referee Mike Dean) and we've been punished."

Former Holland international Bergkamp has 14 days to respond to the charge.
