Republic of Ireland Under-21 defender Cliff Byrne has turned down a permanent move to Scunthorpe from Sunderland. The Irish Under-21 international has spent an impressive three months on loan at Glanford Park, prompting manager Brian Laws to try and secure his services on a permanent basis.
However, Byrne has been offered a new one-year-deal by Sunderland manager Howard Wilkinson when his current contract expires in the summer and he has decided to stay at the Stadium of Light for now and fight for his place in the Black Cats' first team.
