Ferguson admits to 'freak' incident

Alex Ferguson has tonight admitted causing an injury to midfielder David Beckham. Beckham was left nursing a cut to his head after he was hit by a boot kicked by Ferguson following the 2-0 defeat by Arsenal in the FA Cup fifth round at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Speaking this evening, Ferguson admitted the incident was: "One of those freak acts of nature that happens and then it's over. It was a freak, it will never happen again."

Earlier today, United refused to comment on suggestions that Beckham was left requiring stitches after being struck by a boot kicked by Ferguson. According to The Sun, Beckham sustained the head injury as Ferguson vented his fury in the aftermath of Saturday's 2-0 FA Cup defeat by Arsenal at Old Trafford.

A Manchester United spokesman refused to comment on the Beckham incident, saying: "Whatever happens in the dressing room remains private."

The midfielder was sitting in the dressing room after United's 2-0 defeat to perennial rivals Arsenal when the incident is alleged to have happened. The England captain looked grim-faced as he left his home in Cheshire this morning where a wound was clearly visible above his left eye as he drove off past waiting photographers. It is believed the 27-year-old midfielder required two stitches in the cut.
