Heksey gives Reds a point, Premiership round-up

A last-minute header from Emile Heskey gave Liverpool a fully deserved point against the champions and Barclaycard Premiership leaders Arsenal.

The Gunners were slightly the better side in the first half and led through Robert Pires before being pegged back by a second half John Arne Riise piledriver. Dennis Bergkamp put Arsenal ahead again and it looked like a Gunners win until Heskey's last-minute bullet header.

However, Arsenal were left complaining about a dubious corner-kick that led to Heskey's leveller, much in the same way Liverpool left Highbury feeling hard-done by after a controversial Francis Jeffers penalty had given Arsenal a point.

At White Hart Lane, it was another last gasp effort that settled affair - Jermaine Jenas' scrambled effort was enough to give the Magpies all three points and lift them above Manchester United and into second place in the Premiership table.

However, the game was marred by an injury to Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane, who was taken off in the 35th minute with a badly swollen ankle after a tackle from behind from Titus Bramble. Keane may now be a doubt for Brian Kerr's first game in charge of Ireland against Scotland at Hampden Park on February 12.

West Brom were plunged deeper into relegation trouble after a 1-0 defeat at home to Charlton, despite a credible display against the Londoners. A 59th minute header from Sean Bartlett that took a deflection on it way into the back of the Baggies net proved to be decisive.

After an embarrassing FA Cup exit at the hands of Watford, Gary Megson demanded a more committed performance from his men and that was exactly what he got. For long periods of the game West Brom were the better team, but they were unable to create a break-through and that proved crucial.

Meanwhile West Ham may have started what could be one of the great footballing escapes with a 2-1 victory over Blackburn that lifts them off the bottom spot.

Substitute Jermaine Defoe got the crucial winner with a delightful solo effort in the 89th minute that saw him skip in from the left wing and beat Brad Friedel at his near post. Dwight Yorke had given Rovers the lead with aclose-range effort in the 38th minute, with Paolo di Canio, levelling from penalty spot seven minutes after the break.

Meanwhile Manchester City claimed a comfortable 4-1 victory over Fulham thanks in the most part to Nicolas Anelka. Anelka scored the first to cancel out Steed Malbranque's opener and had a hand in the second half goals from Ali Benarbia, Marc Vivien Foe and Shaun Wright Phillips.
