Bolton striker Michael Ricketts has admitted his ambition to win trophies and reclaim his place in the England squad is the reason behind his decision to put in a transfer request. Ricketts has been linked with Tottenham Hotspur since the transfer window re-opened on January 1 but following days of speculation the striker took it upon himself to express his desire to leave Wanderers.
"I've come to the conclusion that the interests of all parties are best served by me continuing my career away from Bolton," he told The Sun newspaper. "The interest shown in me by Tottenham and other Premiership clubs has been flattering. This has not been an easy decision to make."
"The manager gave me the initial opportunity to prove that I am capable of performing at a higher level. I think I have rewarded his faith and repaid the club's investment. I feel that I need to give myself the best opportunity of returning to the international fold and seriously challenging for honours within the game," he added.
However, Bolton are adamant that while they are not forced to listen to offers for the 24-year-old, they will not sell him unless the price is right. They already rejected the possibility of a player-exchange deal with Spurs and are believed to be looking for in the region of £6million for the striker.
