Upson move to Birmingham nears completion

Birmingham are closing in on their fifth signing since the transfer window re-opened, with Arsenal defender Matthew Upson poised to move to St Andrews in a £3 million deal. It is believed Upson will undergo a medical today, with a view to formally completing the switch within the next 24 to 48 hours.

The centre-half became Gunners boss Arsene Wenger's first English signing when he moved from Luton for £1.2 million five years ago and was tipped to become Tony Adams eventual successor. But a series of injuries held back the progress of the former England Under-21 player, who went on loan to Reading earlier this season and he is now desperate for first-team Premiership football.

Blues’ manager Steve Bruce has already brought in Christophe Dugarry, Ferdinand Coly, Jamie Clapham and Stephen Clemence since January 1 - and there are more signings in the pipe-line, with Polish midfielder Piotr Swierczewski (Marseille) and striker Robert Vittek (Slovan Bratislava) both close to completing initial loan moves.
