Newcastle climb to third - Premiership Round-up

Alan Shearer scored after 10.5 seconds as Newcastle beat Manchester City 2-0 at St James' Park to leapfrog Chelsea into third place in the Barclaycard Premiership. The former England captain collected a wayward clearance by City goalkeeper Carlo Nash to strike and make it a terrible start for Kevin Keegan's men.

Shearer's strike partner Craig Bellamy added a second in the 64th minute when he got on the end of Laurent Robert's cross to the far post from the left to seal a miserable week for City, who missed out on signing Robbie Fowler when he changed his mind at the 11th hour over a transfer from Leeds.

An overhead kick in the 85th minute from Youri Djorkaeff earned a vital point for Bolton as they drew 1-1 at Charlton to stay in 17th place. Mark Fish's first goal since April 2001 had looked to be enough to condemn Bolton to defeat. Claus Jensen curled a free-kick into the box, Kevin Lisbie's header was parried by Jussi Jaaskelainen and Fish was on hand to score two minutes into the second-half before Djorkaeff netted the leveller.

Elsewhere, Sunderland slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Everton to remain in the relegation zone. The Toffees had the better of the first period but it was the Black Cats who drew first blood in the 34th minute when Kevin Phillips picked out Kevin Kilbane and the Republic of Ireland international fired across Richard Wright and into the net.

David Moyes' side came back thanks to a brace from American striker Brian McBride, who now has three goals in two games after joining on loan from Columbus Crew. McBride first met Scot Gemmill's cross with an overhead kick which took a deflection and found the corner in the 51st minute and six minutes later he raced clear to add a second.

There was no score at Elland Road, where rock-bottom West Brom held Leeds. Scott Dobie fired narrowly wide 15 minutes in for the Baggies after a free-kick had been charged down by the Leeds defence. At the other end, Russell Hoult produced a wonderful save as he pushed an effort from Alan Smith wide of the post. Gary Megson's team had to survive the last 15 minutes with 10 men after Andy Johnson was sent-off for a second bookable offence.

Albion's neighbours Birmingham, who could still conceivably be sucked into the relegation battle, arrested their run of three defeats with a creditable 1-1 draw against Blackburn at Ewood Park. Graeme Souness' side forged ahead in the 19th minute after Andy Cole's cutback eventually found its way to Damien Duff who despatched the ball into the net. Rovers had to cope with 10 men in the second-half after Andy Todd was sent off on the half-hour for needlessly lashing out at Birmingham striker Christophe Dugarry and they were eventually made to pay when Stern John scored with seven minutes left.

Teddy Sheringham grabbed the only goal as Tottenham beat Aston Villa 1-0 at Villa Park. The veteran striker latched onto Stephen Carr's cross from the right with 21 minutes to go.
