Saints unveil new signing

Southampton have unveiled their latest recruit, an Argentinian winger nicknamed 'The Torpedo', as they aim to continue their impressive form into the new year. Frederico Arias passed a medical for the Saints last night and was today completing the signing of a three-year deal.

Manager Gordon Strachan is hopeful that his side can maintain their place in the top six of the Premiership and Saints scout Terry Cooper believes 23-year-old Arias, who is moving from Velez Sarsfield for an undisclosed fee, could be instrumental in their aim.

"His nickname is 'The Torpedo' and it's easy to see why, he said. He's explosive over 20 metres. And if you're quick over 20 metres, have two good feet and are intelligent, you have all the assets to become a top player. He has two excellent feet - and I watched him three times and couldn't tell which was his best," said Cooper.

Arias, who plays predominantly on the left wing but can also operate on the right, speaks some English and holds an Italian passport, which prevents any non-EU work permit problems.
