Leeds midfielder Lee Bowyer could find himself in hot water again after appearing to stamp on Malaga's Gerardo during last night's 2-1 defeat by the Spanish outfit in the UEFA Cup. The result has added further misery to Leeds and manager Terry Venables' season – a situation which has only been worsened by the latest controversy to dog Bowyer.
Former Leeds great Peter Lorimer condemned Bowyer for the incident and told BBC Radio 5 Live: 'It is very dangerous and we must rid the game of it. It was a carry over from the first leg in Malaga where a lot of niggly stuff had been going on. Lee took the law into his own hands and cannot do this. You can defend most things but you can`t defend that. It was calculated.'
'I think UEFA will step in and punish him in some way when they look at the film. They have to stop things like that with kids watching who play on Sundays. I am a fan of Bowyer`s but that is not good enough,' added Lorimer.
Venables defended Bowyer after the game, dismissing allegations of stamping. ' I don't think he did (stamp). I thought he looked like he wanted to. But I was as close as anybody and I don't think there was any actual stamp,' said the under-fire Leeds boss.
