Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier has insisted that Jerzy Dudek will lose his place to Chris Kirkland against Charlton on Sunday despite playing in Liverpool's Worthington Cup victory over Ipswich last night. Liverpool won the game 5-4 on penalties with Dudek receiving a great response from the Kop and Houllier said: "I'm sorry if I mystified everyone, I didn't intend to deceive people.
"But I decided almost immediately after the United game that I would keep Jerzy in the side. All I needed to do was see him in training to see how he reacted before finalising the decision. And when I watched him I knew he could do it. And I was delighted with the response from the Kop, probably nowhere else in the world would he have received support like that.
He also got it in the dressing room. Some of the lads had got T-shirts saying 'Jerzy, you'll never walk alone' and Chris Kirkland gave him a tremendous reception. They are good friends but he also wanted to help him. Chris will play the game at Charlton on Saturday, and the UEFA tie with Vitesse Arnhem as well as the game after that at Sunderland. He knows that."
