Anelka's France snub could see City punished

Nicolas Anelka’s no-show for the French national squad may have repercussions for his club Manchester City after the French Football Federation announced they will attempt to impose a playing ban on the striker.

Anelka declined a late call-up from France boss Jacques Santini to play against Yugoslavia on Wednesday after injury ruled out Lyon's Sidney Govou yesterday. The FFF have responded by beginning proceedings with FIFA and their own disciplinary committee which could see Anelka miss City's next two games.

A two-game ban would see him miss the November 23 visit to Middlesbrough and the Maine Road encounter with Bolton a week later. But the FFF say they will attempt to impose a one-game suspension immediately.
