Brendan Menton says he will travel to Scotland on Thursday to take part in the joint Irish/Scottish bid for Euro 2008, which he says is "very much alive" despite his resignation as FAI General Secretary. He said that he understands the joint bid is "very much in the running, along with the Austria-Switzerland bid".
The bid, based around six grounds in Scotland and two in Ireland, is one of the favourites with several stadia already in place. The successful bidder will be announced by UEFA next month after officials visited all sites earlier this year.
Euro 2008 team marketing director Simon Lyons maintains there will be no knock-on effect from Menton's resignation. "It will have no effect on the bid at all. There are two associations working for the bid and both of those are still standing. Brendan was very supportive of the bid in his role within the project – as is the whole of the association. But people move in and out of projects all the time," he said.
