Vogts recalls Dickov for Portugal tie

Berti Vogts has named Leicester striker Paul Dickov in his Scotland squad to face Euro 2004 hosts Portugal later in the month having been dropped following the 2-2 draw with the Faroes Islands.

But Vogts admitted the 30-year-old, who has scored seven times for his club this season, had been unfortunate to be playing out of position in the infamous 2-2 draw with the part-timers in September.

He said, “In the last two weeks, I have seen a lot of games and I saw Leicester against Nottingham Forest in which he did well. Maybe it was not fair after the Faroes that I took him off the list. He is a very good striker and now he is back again.”

Vogts had played Dickov on the right wing in Toftir after being told by Foxes boss Micky Adams, who had travelled up to Scotland to meet with Vogts, that he could operate there.

But, with the Scots 2-0 down at half-time, Dickov was substituted and then overlooked for the qualifier in Iceland and the friendly with Canada which followed.
