Sixteen-year-old substitute Wayne Rooney shocked Arsenal today with a late strike to end the Premiership champions' record unbeaten run with a 2-1 defeat at Goodison Park. Rooney won't be 17 until next Thursday but he drilled a stunning 30-yard effort past 38-year-old David Seaman for his first ever Premiership goal that ended Arsenal's 30-match unbeaten run in the league.
It was the visitors who took the lead on eight minutes with their first real attacking move of the game. A shot from Kanu was blocked but Le Ti and David Unsworth failed to clear and it would cost Everton dearly as Freddie Ljungberg flicked the ball past Richard Wright.
Everton deservedly equalised on 22 minutes when Lee Carsley's effort crashed off the post but Tomasz Radzinski pounced on the loose ball and powered it home from 15 yards out.
The game looked to be heading for a draw and yet another unbeaten outing for the double-winners. However, it was Rooney who would prove the hero of the day when he came on with ten minutes remaining for Radzinski and in the final minute fired a magnificent dipping shot past David Seaman that crashed into the net off the underside of the crossbar, much to the delight of the Everton faithful.
