Dicks insists Keane deserved life

Julian Dicks insists former Republic of Ireland captain Roy Keane should have been banned for life for his lunge on Alf Inge Haaland. Manchester United skipper Keane revealed in his autobiography that he set out to hurt Haaland two seasons ago as payback for a clash at Elland Road in 1997, which led to the Irishman rupturing his cruciate ligaments.

The Football Association hit Keane with a five-match suspension and a £150,000 fine earlier this week, but former West Ham defender Dicks told the Sun: "The FA were far too lenient on Keane and a five-game ban was no way near enough. I got a four-match ban when I was alleged to have stamped on John Spencer and I didn't even mean that."

"They should have chucked the book at him and banned him for life for what he did. To go out and try to maim someone is a disgrace, especially as it could put someone's career on the line. I find it remarkable he actually came out and admitted it. I did some silly things when I played but I never went over the top like that. It was terrible," Dicks continued.
