Weir opts out for foreseeable future

David Weir has revealed that his decision to opt out of Berti Vogts' Scotland squad stands for the foreseeable future. It had been thought that Weir's decision to make himself unavailable for selection applied only to the up-coming Euro 2004 qualifying clash with Iceland on October 12 because of Weir's annoyance over comments allegedly made by Vogts regarding the Everton player to the German media.

However, it has now emerged that Weir is unlikely to be involved with the Scottish national team for some time to come. "I have decided not to make myself available for selection for the Scottish national team for the foreseeable future. My reasons for making this decision have been fully explained in a letter I have written to the SFA. However, I will, of course continue to wish the team all the very best for the future," said Weir.
