First Division leaders Portsmouth suffered their first defeat of the season this afternoon after a late strike by Iwan Roberts saw promotion rivals Norwich win 1-0 at Carrow Road. Harry Redknapp's side had plenty of possession but Norwich held on and were rewarded for their efforts in the 81st minute when Roberts' header found the target.
Norwich stay third after the win but move up to 21 points, two behind Leicester City, who drew 0-0 at Sheffield Wednesday, and four behind Portsmouth. Rotherham's 1-0 win over Brighton moved them up to fourth place on goal difference ahead of Sheffield United, who could only draw 1-1 at Gillingham.
Elsewhere, Watford and Crystal Palace served up a thrilling 3-3 draw, while promotion hopefuls Wolves suffered their third defeat of the season with a 1-0 reversal at home to Reading. Coventry player-manager Gary McAllister earned his side all three points with the only goal of the game away to Wimbledon, while Bradford and Burnley shared four goals at Valley Parade.
Meanwhile, bottom club Grimsby are still without a win after Nottingham Forest beat them 3-0 thanks to a hat-trick from David Johnson, while Walsall beat Wimbledon by a similar scoreline at The New Den.
In this evening's game, Preston North End beat Derby County 2-0 thanks to goals from Dickson Etuhu and Northern Ireland's David Healy.
