Cork City moved to second in the eircom Premier Division with a comprehensive 3-1 victory over Derry City at Turner's Cross this afternoon. Alan Bennett opened the scoring with just seven minutes gone and the same player doubled the lead when he added a second on the hour. John O'Flynn put the game beyond the visitors three minutes later, and despite Sean Friars' strike on 67 minutes, there was no way back for Derry who are still without a win in five outings. Cork, meanwhile, climb to second, just three points behind leaders Bohemians.
Meanwhile, leaders Bohemians could only draw 1-1 with a resolute Bray Wanderers at The Carlisle Grounds. The Gypsies took the lead with an own goal through defender Jody Lynch after 67 minutes, but midfielder Stephen Fox equalised for the Seagulls nine minutes from time to ensure Bray's third draw of the season. The point sees Bohs stretch their lead at the top to four points over Cork City and St Patrick's Athletic, while Bray remain third from bottom with three points.
In the day's other game, Shamrock Rovers and bottom club UCD played out a scoreless draw at Tolka Park. Sean Francis missed a penalty for Shams after 58 minutes and their miserable evening was compounded by the sending-off of Stephen McGuinness three minutes from time. The point lifts The Students off the bottom above Derry, while Rovers stay fourth from bottom.
