Shams knock holders Dundalk out of Cup

Shamrock Rovers exacted revenge for last year's semi-final defeat with a 2-1 extra-time victory over holders Dundalk in their Carlsberg FAI Cup second round replay at Tolka Park this evening. Following a scoreless first-half, Waterford teenager Noel Hunt opened the scoring for Shams with a 61st minute effort which looked set to give the Dubliners victory. However, with just two minutes of normal time remaining veteran striker Martin Reilly grabbed an equaliser to send the match into overtime.

Tony Grant restored Rovers' lead in the 109th minute, but the end of the match was soured by the sendings-off of Shams centre-half Stephen McGuinness and Dundalk's Bryan McCrystal following a scuffle in the closing stages.
