Rome giants given six-day deadline

Serie A giants Roma and Lazio have been set a six-day deadline to get their financial situation in order or risk being banned from the league for the coming season. The Rome clubs, winners of the Scudetto in 2000 and 2001 respectively, have until Thursday evening to appeal against the decision and they need to come up with around £2million to satisfy the Lega Calcio by Monday. Six teams in Serie B - Fiorentina, Genoa, Messina, Napoli, Palermo and Verona - have been set the same deadline.

It is believed neither Roma or Lazio have paid the full money to subscribe to Serie A, but both clubs last night insisted there would be no problem about paying the cash. Roma chairman Franco Sensi insisted: "Do not even joke about it, there isn't a problem. If it is a question of £2m then I will personally put up the money." Lazio owner Sergio Cragnotti was equally confident, saying: "We do not have problem."
