France name Santini as new boss

The French Football Federation today named Jacques Santini as the new manager of the international team. Santini succeeds Roger Lemerre who was sacked following France's embarrassing defence of their title at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and Korea. France failed to win a single match or score a single goal during the tournament and exited after the first round.

The French FA announced their decision to appoint the former Lyon coach in a statement on their website. His first task as the French boss will be a friendly international in Tunisia on August 21 before qualification for Euro 2004 gets underway in the autumn.
