Trapattoni will remain as Italian coach

Italy manager Giovanni Trapattoni's future is secure for next season, Italian Football federation president Franco Carraro confirmed today. The decision to back Trapattoni despite Italy's controversial 2-1 second round elimination to South Korea in the World Cup was unanimously agreed during a five-hour session of the first day of the FISC federal council meeting.

Carraro had backed Trapattoni on his return from the Far East. "In my opinion he should stay in place," said Carraro. And Trapattoni vowed he would not follow a host of big names who have quit their jobs as national team coach since the World Cup. Spain's Jose Antonio Camacho resigned and France's Roger Lemerre was sacked.
