Republic of Ireland defender Kenny Cunningham has completed his move from Wimbledon to Premiership newcomers Birmingham City for £3.5 million. The 31-year-old Dubliner was a member of the Irish squad that reached the second round of the World Cup last month before being beaten in a penalty shootout by Spain.
"After the World Cup I was looking forward to starting the season with Wimbledon but things happen very quickly in football. There were a number of reasons for my move but the main one was the attraction of Premiership football. It was an opportunity too good to turn down," said Cunningham.
Birmingham won promotion to the top flight last May, beating Norwich City in the first division play-off final, and Cunningham said survival is the main aim for this season. "It's going to be a huge challenge for us to stay in the Premiership. I'm sure supporters will be dreaming of a honeymoon period, as happened in the past with Sunderland and Ipswich, but our realistic aim is to consolidate our position," he added.
