Phil Thompson today confirmed Liverpool's interest in Leeds midfielder Lee Bowyer but admitted that discussions for the player are ongoing. Bowyer is on the Elland Road transfer list after refusing to sign a new contract at the end of last season. Liverpool expressed an interest in the player then but the fee they offered Leeds, thought to by around £7.5m, was never going to be enough for a player Leeds value at £15m.
Bowyer's contract runs out at the end of the upcoming season however and Leeds may be forced to drop their asking price, or risk losing him on a free Bosman at the end of the season.
Thompson told the Liverpool Echo, "He is a player we have admired for some time. Nothing has been finalised at the moment but discussions are ongoing. He has things in his game which we need and he can also weigh in with goals. He is a quality player."
Bowyer, 25, fell out with Leeds after being fined by the club in the wake of his court case.
