Lemerre sacked as French coach

France coach Roger Lemerre has today been sacked by the French Football Federation after a poor showing from the 1998 world champions at this year's World Cup finals. However, he will remain on as technical director but a new coach will be brought in to guide France to the 2004 European Championships.

France failed to win a single game at the World Cup in Japan and Korea and failed to score a single goal and Lemerre's departure comes as no shock. The defending champions suffered a shock defeat to debutants Senegal in the opening game of the tournament and this was followed up by a scoreless draw with Uruguay and a 2-0 defeat to Denmark.

Lemerre's replacement is expected to be named before the end of this month.
