Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger wants England goalkeeper David Seaman to sign an extended contract at Highbury. Seaman was distraught 12 days ago when he was caught out by Ronaldinho's free-kick for the goal which sent England home from the World Cup.
England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson emphasised that Seaman will remain his number one goalkeeper if he is a regular in Arsenal's first team. But Wenger has the desire to extend Seaman's 12-year Highbury career past his 39th birthday in September. "I can understand why Sevn-Goran Eriksson wants to keep David on, as it's the same reason I want him to stay at Arsenal," said Wenger.
"That reason is because he is the best goalkeeper in England. It's as simple as that. We will talk about things in the next few days and I hope he decides to stay on," added the Gunners boss. The Frenchman is expected back at Highbury next week and wants to renew the contracts of Seaman and star French midfielder Robert Pires before the start of the new Premiership season.
